Physical Education

Key Stage 3

Intent:

At Brayton we recognise the importance of leading an active and healthy lifestyle, which is promoted through an in depth curriculum. Exercise is fundamental, as it allows you to function and complete everyday tasks, as well as improving quality of life and life expectancy. Students will be taught how to access higher skills and to apply these to competitive situations with competence. Through our teaching of PE, we will instil our core values and transferable life skills such as resilience (growth mindset) and mutual respect as well as providing them with opportunities to take part in competitive sport through our extensive extra-curricular programme and our sporting academy pathways. Physical Education not only promotes a healthy active lifestyle but opens a wide range of career opportunities such as; Sports Scientist, Professional Athlete, Coach, Events Manager, Sports Psychologist or Teacher.

Our curriculum is designed to meet the needs of our students; its core aims are:

  • To offer students a wide range of activities designed to stretch and challenge pupils ability
  • To encourage students to use a range of tactics and strategies to overcome opponents in competitive situations
  • To develop students leadership and independence through student-led activities
  • To enable students to develop an understanding of the theory aspect including Applied Anatomy and Physiology; Sociocultural Influences and Sports Psychology

At Brayton we offer talented students a pathway into our Netball and Rugby academies. Here they will receive expert coaching, focusing upon mastery of skills and increasing their technical and tactical knowledge and application to the game. Students will train as part of their squads during their applied resilience lessons. The traditional values of hard work, commitment, respect and sportsmanship are all held in high esteem and regularly focused on in lessons. The students will take part in differentiated, safe and well-constructed training sessions with the aim of developing a training culture which ensures our rugby and netball players are in the best physical condition to perform optimally. We also aim to develop a knowledge and understanding of the importance of training and preparing for sport correctly. This holistic approach to the development of our students supports the school’s ethos in preparing them for lifelong learning and development.

In KS3 students learn and practice basic skills throughout year 7. As they progress into year 8 and 9 students recap the basic skills and the start to implement them in to small sided games and competitive situations. Students will then begin to work on their tactical awareness and ability to outwit opponents. Throughout the terms students will also learn the basic of the anatomy, physiology and psychology that underpin sports performance. This will give them an insight to the content that is delivered as GCSE PE and give them a base knowledge. Sports are completed on a rotation cycle which means that not all groups are on the same sport at each time.

Students in KS3 complete a self-assessment for every sport. At the start of each term, they assess themselves against the sporting level descriptors and create a target for them to focus on over the course of the term. This is to encourage students to take ownership of their own learning and also allows them to see the progress that they are making within lesson.

In Year 9, students can opt to study PE as a pre-option GCSE course. They will receive two lessons per week, usually in a block.

The pre-option course focusses on developing and building the students’ enjoyment of PE, whilst teaching them a range of skills and techniques required to access the subject at a higher level.

In year 10 and 11 students can opt to study GCSE Physical Education. The course will be completed in one year with students having 6 lessons per week. The lessons are split into 2 lessons covering component 1 Physical Factors Affecting Performance; 2 lessons covering component 2 Socio-cultural Issues and Sports Psychology and then the remaining 2 lessons are spent refining students practical skills. We follow the OCR Physical Education course this equips students with the knowledge, understanding and skills to develop their own performance in sport, and the benefit of physical activity to health, fitness and well-being. The course is assessed with clear examination papers, two one-hour papers worth 60 marks each, alongside the NEW where students complete three sports and one performance analysis tasks.

For year 10 core PE the practical is split into 3 elements: GCSE Sport, Sport Ed and Health Related Exercise.

GCSE Sport

Within the GCSE Sport strand students who are either currently taking GCSE or are taking GCSE PE in Y11 will be in one class. These students will complete sports that are on the specification practicing all of the core and advanced skills required. As well as developing these skills to be able to be performed with accuracy, control and fluency. Students will also develop their decision making and tactical awareness being able to select and use appropriate skills and apply appropriate strategies to performances.

Sport Ed

Within the Sport Ed stand students will complete a series of lessons on multiple sports throughout the year. The lessons will be structured different to those in KS3, each lesson will be student led. Students will work in teams throughout the course of the year, at the start of each lesson they will be given a skill to practice. In their teams they will need to set up a drill and then take part in it aiming to improve their ability in that skill. In the second part of the lesson students will take part in a series of fixtures. The aim of this strand is to continue to build on the skills students developed in KS3, as well as build on students’ confidence, team work and leadership skills too.

HRE

We understand that competitive sport is not for everyone. That is why we have included the health-related fitness strand into out Y10 core PE. This strand will allow students to experience a wide range of different activities that they can do to remain active. The main aim of this strand is to promote lifelong participation in physical activity.
